SUMMARY:Autumn Moon Festival Community Screening
DESCRIPTION:This event aims to provide free a consultation to a Vietnamese population of lower SES. We primarily focus on follow up\, ensuring that the patient is comfortable taking the next steps in their health. Based on their concerns\, we offer infographics on their condition and ensure they fully understand. Nearby clinics that accept underinsured/not insured patients are provided as well as a list of Vietnamese speaking providers. Concerns about insurance or transportation are also answered as we provide an insurance hotline primarily for the AANHPI population\, and guides on using public transport/ride share apps. We aim to increase health literacy as patients will receive a summary of their visit\, resources offered\, and follow up steps. This fits APAMSA’s mission and values as we are actively working to target and reduce the specific disparities faced in the AANHPI population. This also provides an opportunity for undergraduate and medical students to learn more about serving the AANHPI community in a culturally sensitive manner.

SUMMARY:Region 1-3 Conference
DESCRIPTION:Region conferences are held annually with the purpose of advocating for the health of AANHPI communities. Our theme this year is Reclaiming the Narrative: Medicine through our Lens and this theme calls on us to take ownership of our experiences as Asian Americans\, challenge stereotypes like the “model minority”\, and uplift the cultural wisdom we bring to the practice of medicine. We will have many breakout sessions dedicated to this mission.

SUMMARY:APAMSA Region IV & IX Conference
DESCRIPTION:“The upcoming event is the Regional Conference for the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA)\, hosted by Baylor College of Medicine on Saturday\, September 27th. This year’s conference will serve Regions IV and IX\, encompassing medical schools in the South and Southeast. Our primary audience includes medical students from these regions\, as well as undergraduate students preparing to apply to medical school. Based on attendance at prior regional conferences\, we anticipate approximately 150 participants. \nThe overarching goal of the conference is to foster community and connection among AANHPI students in the field of medicine. The program for our conference will feature a keynote speaker\, workshops\, and a research poster session. The workshops cover topics such as applying to medical school and residency\, health issues prevalent in the AANHPI community\, and hands-on simulation skills. We have invited speakers to discuss the impact of hepatitis on the AANHPI community\, the risks of alcohol flush\, policy and advocacy. Through our conference\, we aim to provide both professional development and a platform for meaningful networking\, ultimately strengthening the support network for current and future AANHPI physicians. “

SUMMARY:St James Health Fair
DESCRIPTION:The St. James Health Fair is a recurrent health fair and screening event hosted by Rush Medical College every fall\, with a specific focus on serving underserved Asian American and immigrant individuals in the Bridgeport and Chicago Chinatown area. The health fair is student-led and includes vision and chronic disease screenings\, healthcare education and resources\, and a free food pantry hosted in collaboration with the local St. James Pantry in Bridgeport. As the main organizers behind the event\, we not only integrate multiple Rush Medical departments and attendings into supervising outreach and care\, but also collaborate with other Chicagoland medical schools (eg: UChicago\, Northwestern) to serve even more community members. As part of our screening\, we also integrate multidisciplinary student healthcare volunteers from each institution\, with each screening table providing translation services and culturally sensitive care for individuals. While the event primarily serves around 100 elderly and underserved AAPI community members every year\, we also serve any individuals in the Chicago area that may need access to free screenings and resources – including around 30 to 40 non-AAPI\, marginalized community members who often do not have health insurance or do not speak English. This event aligns strongly with APAMSA’s mission in values by not only providing resources and accessibility to underserved AAPI communities\, but also by highlighting unique health challenges facing the Chicago AAPI communities in a culturally sensitive manner.

SUMMARY:Asia Fest 2025
DESCRIPTION:AsiaFest is an annual festival bringing together the AANHPI community in the Research Triangle Area of North Carolina. It attracts over 10\,000 visitors annually and is not only a cultural festive event but also an opportunity to outreach to the community. Our APAMSA chapter volunteers at this event annually to provide health screenings and education counseling for high blood pressure and diabetes to the AANHPI community. This is an integral service that allows us to ensure community members\, especially with those who may have the least access to primary care (e.g. non-English speaking elders\, income restricted\, etc.) to obtain these services and speak with licensed physicians about their health status.
