SUMMARY:Marshallese Jemenei (Constitution) Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:We will be hosting two upcoming community health fairs—in partnership with community leaders\, Range Community Clinic\, and the Community Health Association of Spokane—to provide healthcare services and resources to AANHPI communities. Our first event will be at Spokane\, Washington’s (WA) Lunar New Year Festival Celebration on February 1\, 2025\, with over 2\,000 attendees. The second event will be at the Marshallese Jemenei (Constitution) Day Celebration in Spokane on May 12\, 2025\, with over 1\,000 attendees. Across these two community-wide celebrations\, we expect approximately 500 individuals to participate in our health fair\, which will include taking vital signs\, providing hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) tests\, blood glucose tests\, lipid panels\, and Influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. The goals and objectives of the health fairs are to (1) provide AANHPI communities in Spokane with access to free health screenings (e.g.\, HbA1c\, cholesterol)\, (2) improve health literacy by providing basic health education on common risk factors and health disparities within AANHPI communities\, (3) improve healthcare access and utilization by offering referrals to a local low-cost clinic (e.g.\, CHAS\, Range)\, (4) enhance the community presence of the Washington State University (WSU) APAMSA through development of community partnerships. \nInterested participants will check-in at the front table of our station\, where they will be introduced to a medical student (one of six on the team). If needed and if feasible\, the participant will be matched with a medical student\, volunteer\, or community member who can translate and communicate in their preferred language. After receiving informed consent from the participant\, the medical student will measure the participant’s vital signs. After this is measured\, the medical student will perform the blood glucose test and an HbA1c test\, if needed or if there is prior history of diabetes. All steps\, including taking vital signs and providing tests\, will be completed under the supervision of a faculty physician or nurse from CHAS\, Range\, or WSU. Medical student volunteers have created intake forms to record screening results\, which they will provide to every participant. Medical and pharmacy students have also been trained in the provision of vaccines\, so if participants would like an Influenza or COVID-19 vaccination\, our team will provide that in a sectioned-off\, private section as well. After this\, the interprofessional team will assess the participant’s medical history\, physical exam\, and health screening results with the faculty physician or nurse to provide recommendations. Community health workers from CHAS will be available to provide assistance in accessing medical and non-medical services (e.g.\, patient registration\, Medicare and Medicaid enrollment) and care coordination. \nIn alignment with APAMSA goals\, our health fairs aim to address health equities faced by and strengthen healthcare access for underrepresented and underserved AANHPI community members through cost-free\, basic healthcare services. Having organized community health fairs this and last year for Vietnamese\, Filipino\, and Korean communities throughout Spokane\, our team often sees undiagnosed hypertension and diabetes\, significant health issues that disproportionately affect minoritized communities and have long-lasting impacts on overall health and well-being. Health fairs\, amongst other community-based interventions\, have immense potential to lessen significant barriers (e.g.\, language proficiency\, financial limitations\, cultural norms) that have contributed to poor health outcomes among AANHPI communities. Notably\, Marshallese communities in particular have been excluded from federal healthcare programs for decades\, with only recent changes improving access to affordable healthcare. We anticipate a portion of participants to be uninsured\, undocumented\, or immigrants with limited access to consistent\, culturally-competent\, primary care. Participants may be ineligible for federally funded healthcare programs\, so for some participants\, this may be their first time receiving healthcare screening. We aim to improve access to care by connecting individuals to hypertension and diabetes screenings\, health insurance\, health education\, and medical care at our health fairs.  \nLastly\, as a team of female\, Asian American-identifying medical students of color— underrepresented in research and healthcare—we recognize the impact and importance of providing care and support to the communities we call our own. The healthcare needs of the AANHPI communities in Spokane have not been well-researched or explored\, and through organizing a community health fair\, we aim to learn more about the needs of these communities while simultaneously filling in healthcare gaps that this community may be facing.

SUMMARY:Nunchi Health 2025 Spring Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Nunchi Health Summit is an one-day virtual mental health conference catered towards communities of immigrant origin. For our Fall 2024 Summit\, approximately 20% of the participants were from Asian or Pacific Islander backgrounds. The summit includes mental health advocacy workshops\, a mental health panel featuring professionals\, and a pitch contest for participants to present their mental health oriented projects. The Summit aims to foster discourses among high school students\, college students\, and young professionals interested in mental health to exchange ideas\, gain valuable mentorship\, and network with like-minded people.  \nYouth mental health is a public health crisis. One in six children has a treatable mental health disorder. Among them\, children of immigrant origin face unique mental health challenges\, including stigma\, intergenerational trauma\, language barriers\, minority stress\, imposter syndrome\, and cross-cultural conflicts. We know that people of immigrant origin are less likely to receive mental health care. For young adults of immigrant origin\, mental health disorders reflect one of the largest burdens of disability and suicide is one of the leading causes of death.  \nUltimately\, we at Nunchi Health aim to address the much underserved mental health needs of young adults of immigrant origin through our free and accessible programming. We come together to learn about our community’s needs and find the power in our collective action.

SUMMARY:APAMSA x CSA x China Care Service Crafts
DESCRIPTION:This two hour long event will be a large community service collaboration between three clubs – Chinese Student Association\, APAMSA\, and China Care – who all have committees relating to service opportunities within the Asian community in St. Louis and beyond. We will be making items such as photo frames\, scent pouches\, fans\, health kits\, bracelet making kits\, and everything we make will be donated to the partner organizations of each of the three clubs. For APAMSA\, we will have students assemble health kits at our station. These health kits will be donated to Health Protection and Education Services (HPES)\, a non-profit dedicated to providing health education and free health screening services to the AAPI community in St. Louis. HPES sees hundreds of patients each month and has greatly appreciated our donations in the past\, so we hope to continue strengthening our long term partnership through providing additional health kits to the community. Additionally\, by leveraging the collective reach of all three clubs\, we hope to engage many new students\, spark meaningful conversations\, and educate them about HPES. Ultimately\, we will support APAMSA’s mission by spreading health awareness to a large number of students\, all while helping bridge health disparities within the AAPI population in St. Louis.

SUMMARY:ICOM Mental Health and Hepatitis Educational Booth at Idaho Chinese Association's Lunar New Year Celebration
DESCRIPTION:For this event\, we would look to represent ICOM’s APAMSA chapter and set up an informational booth at the Idaho Chinese Association’s annual Lunar New Year celebration. As part of our booth\, we will be displaying information and speaking with local community members about the significance of Hepatitis B screening and mental health awareness\, especially within the AANHPI community. Additionally\, we will provide resources and screening checklists for attendees to take home. In order to further engage with attendees\, we would also intend to set up a “”spin the wheel”” trivia activity as a way to interact with people about the information we are presenting.  \nWe believe that participating in this event will allow our chapter to connect and learn\, while also providing information about important health challenges within our local AANHPI community. Additionally\, as osteopathic student doctors\, we would like to further emphasize the importance of preventative medicine and improving the wellbeing and health of underserved populations.

DESCRIPTION:Part of our event involves making meaningful\, encouraging cards to celebrate immigrants and the progress they have made. The cards will be donated to immigrants from the International Institute\, a nonprofit dedicated to providing opportunities and resources for immigrants. Additionally\, members will also help assemble 20 health kits\, which will be donated to Health Protection and Education Services (HPES)\, a non-profit with a focus on providing health education and free health screening services to the AAPI community in St. Louis. This activity allows us to not only promote community engagement but also educate members about bridging health disparities that affect local AAPI populations. Ultimately\, our event supports APAMSA’s mission by raising health awareness\, uplifting the local immigrant community\, and increasing access to health items for AAPI populations in St. Louis.

Fresno County is home to one of the largest agricultural areas in the US\, which poses concerns for long-term UV exposure conditions like skin cancer. SUMMARY:APAMSA Community Health Fair
DESCRIPTION:At the University of Colorado School of Medicine\, we want to increase access to health and vision care for the AANHPI populations around our local communities in Denver and Aurora. At the Denver Cherry Blossom Festival\, we will provide free healthcare screening to anyone walking into our booth. This festival is anticipated to be a very large event in Colorado as it is their 50th event. There will be many other booths offering a variety of services and products to attract the Asian American communities in Denver. We anticipate great foot traffic through this festival and will target the uninsured communities with free screenings. We will provide screenings for common medical conditions\, including high blood pressure\, obesity\, vision loss\, and glaucoma. We will have medical students\, ophthalmology residents\, and licensed clinicians (physicians\, PAs\, and NPs) to help us. We have reached out to the Ophthalmology Department and DAWN Clinic (a free clinic linked to our medical school) for volunteers. At the health fair\, we will also distribute informational pamphlets regarding these medical conditions in layman’s terms for our community members and additional resources on free clinics near Denver. Our goal is to help catch treatable medical conditions early and connect people to long-term care at local free and low-cost clinics.

Decades-long exclusion in federal healthcare programs faced by Marshallese individuals living in Spokane\, compounded with various barriers including cultural norms\, language barriers\, and financial limitations\, have contributed to health disparities that can manifest in the form of increased nutrition challenges\, limited knowledge of available resources\, and greater inequities in undiagnosed hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Community-based interventions such as health fairs have the potential to lessen health disparities and improve access to care through connecting individuals to hypertension and diabetes screenings\, health insurance\, health education\, and medical care. \nOur health fair will be held at a community-wide Constitution Day Celebration\, with over 1\,000 attendees. We expect approximately 200 participants at the health fair. The goals and objectives of the event is to (1) provide Marshallese and other AANHPI communities in Spokane\, WA\, with access to free health screenings\, (2) improve health literacy by providing basic health education on common risk factors and health disparities within Marshallese communities\, (3) improve healthcare access and utilization by offering referrals to a local low-cost clinic\, (4) provide health science students with opportunities to serve medically underserved APA communities in interprofessional teams\, and (5) enhance the community presence of the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine through development of community partnerships. \nA community member\, hereinafter referred to as the “participant\,” who is interested in receiving a free health screening will check in at the front desk/table where s/he will be introduced to one of five interprofessional teams of two students: one medical and one nursing/pharmacy student. If needed\, the participant will be matched with a team with at least one volunteer who can translate and communicate in his/her preferred language\, if feasible. After receiving informed consent from the participant\, the medical student will measure the participant’s vital signs. Once these measurements are obtained\, the nursing/pharmacy student will perform the blood glucose test and a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) test\, if needed. Both the measurement of vital signs and performance of point-of-care testing will be completed under the supervision of a faculty physician or nurse. \nAfterwards\, the medical student will perform a focused physical exam under the supervision of a faculty physician or nurse. The interprofessional team will assess the participant’s medical history\, physical exam\, and health screening results with the faculty physician or nurse to provide recommendations. The participant will also be given the opportunity to receive foot care from two nurse practitioners in a separated\, private area. Community health workers from CHAS will be available to provide assistance in accessing medical and non-medical services (e.g.\, patient registration\, Medicare and Medicaid enrollment) and care coordination. \nWe expect a considerable proportion of health fair participants to be uninsured\, undocumented\, or immigrants who may be ineligible for federally funded coverage\, such as Medicaid and Medicare. For some individuals in the Spokane Marshallese community\, this health fair may mark the first health screening they have ever received or experienced in many years. The healthcare needs of the local\, national\, and international Marshallese communities are severely understudied\, and Marshallese communities are sorely underrepresented in research and healthcare\, as are female students of color in medical school leadership\, the vast majority of our team. Our project goals directly relate to strengthening healthcare systems for AANHPI communities and addressing health disparities through direct service that uplifts underrepresented and underserved AANHPI community members and students in our community.

DESCRIPTION:TouroCOM Middletown APAMSA and Heart of Dinner NYC are partnering to make a meaningful event to address the needs of Asian American seniors in under-resourced areas of New York City. Heart of Dinner’s mission aligns with APAMSA’s values and focuses on providing culturally thoughtful care packages to combat food insecurity and isolation among Asian American elders. This collaboration allows APAMSA members to curate care packages with nourishing meals\, handwritten notes\, and illustrated bags\, which aim to alleviate loneliness and promote well-being in AANHPI communities. Since 2020\, Heart of Dinner have welcomed volunteers and organizations to donate their efforts to help the elder Asian population and has successfully provided 700 care packages each week to the AANHPI community. The event not only supports Heart of Dinner’s mission but also resonates with APAMSA’s commitment to culturally sensitive healthcare. By engaging in this activity\, medical students have the opportunity to meet\, exchange experiences\, and develop personally and professionally through leadership and service. Our hope is to raise awareness of the declining mental health Asian American seniors can face when being isolated in regions that could not serve their native dishes or speak in their indigenous  language. This event’s ultimate goal is to make a positive impact and spread joy within our beloved community through this collaborative effort with Heart of Dinner.

SUMMARY:CNY Festival Health Screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Triangle Area Chinese American Society (TACAS) holds an annual Chinese New Year Festival which saw an attendance of over 5000 participants last year. We anticipate that this will include many individuals ranging in age\, with varying language capacities and access to care. In particular\, recent literature indicates that Asian American elders are afraid of seeking health care in the United States due to a fear of cost\, language barriers\, and cultural reasons\, which include not wanting to burden their children with their health problems as well as distrust of western medicine and western health systems. Thus\, partnering with TACAS\, we will be providing a screening booth with basic measures of health including BMI\, blood pressure\, and blood sugar\, as well as the presence of a Mandarin speaking physician who will be able to provide care to screened individuals without language barriers. For screened individuals who have abnormal results or do not have established primary care\, we have a compiled resource list of Asian-language-speaking physicians in the DukeHealth system\, as well as methods of contact to establish care with each of those physicians.

SUMMARY:AANHPI Disparities Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This event comprises a 1-hour educational\, interactive workshop that focuses on the Asian monolith bias and the nature of different health disparities that affect specific AANHPI subgroups. This is the product of the Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) Writing Fellowship\, which was awarded to a group of APAMSA members earlier in 2023. Participants will be administered a pre-workshop and post-workshop survey for evaluation of the workshop. Our eventual goal is to create an online\, scaleable version of this workshop that will hopefully be integrated into our medical school curriculum and potentially be made available to medical students across the US. We will host Pre-Health and Medical students from the PA\, DE\, MD\, and VA area and discuss topics related to AANHPI health and wellness. We will have speakers\, panels\, breakout sessions\, and a social networking event.

SUMMARY:Agape Clinic Health Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Agape Clinic is a charity clinic that serves predominantly uninsured low-income and Hispanic community members\, including refugees and immigrants\, with primary care to our patients. We are hosting a Community Health Fair next month\, where we will provide free health screenings and education for adults and children\, as well as connect them with local resources. APAMSA volunteers will be helping with providing health education and promoting the AoURP.
