SUMMARY:Fountain of Life Health Fair
DESCRIPTION:Our APAMSA chapter is collaborating with Fountain of Life\, the Korean American Society\, and the Vietnamese American Community to host an Asian American Health & Wellness Fair in the Johnson County\, Kansas community. This event aims to serve individuals from the Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities\, as well as other marginalized groups. \nAt the health fair\, attendees will have access to various screenings\, including blood pressure\, lipid panel\, glucose\, mental health\, and skin cancer screenings. In addition\, we will provide informational tabling by organizations such as the Johnson County Aging & Human Service Department\, Johnson County Mental Health Center\, Johnson County Department of Health & Environment\, and Sunflower Health Plan. We will also have translators available to assist with communication between attendees and healthcare providers. \nThe goal of this event is to offer essential healthcare services and resources to the diverse population of Johnson County\, particularly individuals who may face barriers to accessing healthcare or communicating with the healthcare system. By providing screenings and connecting attendees with primary care providers or specialists as needed\, we aim to promote preventive care and improve overall health outcomes in our community. \nThis event aligns with the mission and values of the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) by advocating for health equity\, providing culturally competent care\, and fostering collaboration among community organizations. SUMMARY:Greater Dayton Minority Health Expo
DESCRIPTION:Our APAMSA members will be conduct hepatitis education through explaining the stigmas\, risks\, immunization. We will also be providing blood glucose checks and blood pressure checks. Supervising our event is Dr. Grewal who will provide health counseling for any patients who had concerning screenings or needed to schedule a follow up appointment.  \nAt the Minority Health Expo\, our local chapter of APAMSA aims to provide vital health screenings and hepatitis education to individuals in minority health groups of Greater Dayton such as individuals from AANHPI and other marginalized communities. This event directly addresses specific health needs and disparities they may face as these communities often encounter barriers to accessing healthcare services\, including language barriers\, cultural stigmas\, and limited resources. We aim to bridge these gaps in healthcare and empower these individuals to take control of their health through providing care with cultural sensitivity.  \nThis aligns with the missions and values of APAMSA as we are addressing unique health challenges faced by the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities through outreach and education and are addressing health equity.

SUMMARY:Decorate & Distress for Heart of Dinner
DESCRIPTION:TouroCOM Middletown APAMSA and Heart of Dinner NYC are partnering to make a meaningful event to address the needs of Asian American seniors in under-resourced areas of New York City. Heart of Dinner’s mission aligns with APAMSA’s values and focuses on providing culturally thoughtful care packages to combat food insecurity and isolation among Asian American elders. This collaboration allows APAMSA members to curate care packages with nourishing meals\, handwritten notes\, and illustrated bags\, which aim to alleviate loneliness and promote well-being in AANHPI communities. Since 2020\, Heart of Dinner have welcomed volunteers and organizations to donate their efforts to help the elder Asian population and has successfully provided 700 care packages each week to the AANHPI community. The event not only supports Heart of Dinner’s mission but also resonates with APAMSA’s commitment to culturally sensitive healthcare. By engaging in this activity\, medical students have the opportunity to meet\, exchange experiences\, and develop personally and professionally through leadership and service. Our hope is to raise awareness of the declining mental health Asian American seniors can face when being isolated in regions that could not serve their native dishes or speak in their indigenous  language. This event’s ultimate goal is to make a positive impact and spread joy within our beloved community through this collaborative effort with Heart of Dinner.

SUMMARY:2024 National Conference
DESCRIPTION:n recent years\, APAMSA National Conference themes have centered around boldly imagining the future and thoughtfully examining the past in order to bring our community together around the common goal of addressing healthcare disparities. Now we ask: How do we sustainably solve these challenges by employing the strengths that already exist within our communities and unify these efforts? This year\, our theme is “Blooming in the Desert: Resilience\, Adaptation\, and Growth.” We want to emphasize mobilizing existing activism and local stakeholders to collaboratively and creatively meet these goals amid both seasons of monsoons and droughts. This theme is rooted in our chapter’s unique experience as a group of medical students at a young but eager university that was established to serve a rapidly growing city with ever changing needs. As we continue to learn how to “bloom” in these early stages to serve our own community\, we recognize that countless communities across the country are doing the same. 2024 APAMSA National Conference is an opportunity for us to learn from each others’ experiences to shape AANHPI health across the country.

DESCRIPTION:The diversity festival occurs annually to encourage students and vendors from various background to share their cultures and knowledge with others. Each year\, there are many vendors and visitors from the neighborhood to learn about the growing diversity of Mesa Arizona. This event will allow us to recruit a diversity of participants for All of Us research program\, particularly AANHPI that attend the event. We will have flyers and incentives available to encourage visitors to go to one the Banner collection sites for All of Us program near our campus. We will have volunteer who are multi-lingual to accommodate for the linguistic need.

SUMMARY:CNY Festival Health Screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Triangle Area Chinese American Society (TACAS) holds an annual Chinese New Year Festival which saw an attendance of over 5000 participants last year. We anticipate that this will include many individuals ranging in age\, with varying language capacities and access to care. In particular\, recent literature indicates that Asian American elders are afraid of seeking health care in the United States due to a fear of cost\, language barriers\, and cultural reasons\, which include not wanting to burden their children with their health problems as well as distrust of western medicine and western health systems. Thus\, partnering with TACAS\, we will be providing a screening booth with basic measures of health including BMI\, blood pressure\, and blood sugar\, as well as the presence of a Mandarin speaking physician who will be able to provide care to screened individuals without language barriers. For screened individuals who have abnormal results or do not have established primary care\, we have a compiled resource list of Asian-language-speaking physicians in the DukeHealth system\, as well as methods of contact to establish care with each of those physicians.

SUMMARY:AANHPI Disparities Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This event comprises a 1-hour educational\, interactive workshop that focuses on the Asian monolith bias and the nature of different health disparities that affect specific AANHPI subgroups. This is the product of the Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) Writing Fellowship\, which was awarded to a group of APAMSA members earlier in 2023. Participants will be administered a pre-workshop and post-workshop survey for evaluation of the workshop. Our eventual goal is to create an online\, scaleable version of this workshop that will hopefully be integrated into our medical school curriculum and potentially be made available to medical students across the US. Helping to disaggregate the Asian American monolith through this workshop aligns with APAMSA’s mission to promote the health of the AANHPI community and help future healthcare professionals understand how to care for patients within different AANHPI subgroups in a culturally sensitive manner.

SUMMARY:Health Screening at Festival of Mary
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be working with a previous APAMSA national board member and now IM attending (George Nguyen\, VP Membership 2018-2020) to host a health screening booth at the Festival of Mary hosted by the Saint Louis the King Church\, a church that serves as a community center for the local Viet population. We hope to highlight the health issues that disproportionally affect asian populations and provide the community with resources to tackle these issues. Dr. George Nguyen is a current faculty at our affiliated institution (Banner University Medical Center – Phoenix) who has extensive connections with clinics around the Phoenix area with whom we could guide the community to. We’ll also be working with Be the Match spread awareness on bone marrow disorders and sign up participants into registry if they wish\, along with AoURP.

DESCRIPTION:The Agape Clinic is a charity clinic that serves predominantly uninsured low-income and Hispanic community members\, including refugees and immigrants\, with primary care to our patients. We are hosting a Community Health Fair next month\, where we will provide free health screenings and education for adults and children\, as well as connect them with local resources. APAMSA volunteers will be helping with providing health education and promoting the AoURP.
